“If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it”

The Golfer’s Pivot and Golf MTRx
The body (pivot)
How the body moves in the golf swing is often called the pivot. The pivot consists of the feet, knees, hips and shoulders. The best analogy I have ever heard as to how the pivot performs in the golf swing is that of a bomber plane (the pivot) carrying the bomb (the club) to its assigned destination. When thinking of this analogy, which has greatly influenced my teaching, you can see how the pivot can become the great destroyer of the necessary alignments for precision golf.

Kinematic sequence
The order in which the parts of the pivot perform is called the kinematic sequence. Think of the kinematic sequence as links in a chain. On the downswing, the links would move from the ground up, starting with the feet and followed by the knees, hips, shoulders, and golf club. Without this chain and order, though the hands can compensate to some degree, a price will be paid by the golfer in the form of accuracy and especially distance or power. An efficient kinematic sequence and pivot will produce a rhythmic, coordinated, athletic motion.

“If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it”
Until the release of the Golf MTRx app, those who were privy to such measuring devices were facilities and labs that invested large amounts of money into such tools. For the majority of golfers, this type of information and how to apply it was not available. But now with Golf MTRx, the information and measuring of this important element in the golf swing is now readily and easily available at an affordable price. It doesn’t stop at just measuring, though, as Golf MTRx home takes it one step further by providing corrective measures in the form of drills that address a particular golfer’s deficiency.

Application
We live in a world where there are so many technology-based self-help tools that a whole segment of golfers have become “do it yourselfers.” Many times, the data and information collected only becomes just another set of numbers without any meaning or directions on how to apply it. Golf MTRx can serve as a bridge between student and coach by:

  • Promoting a new level of learning
  • Engaging the student so that more time is put into practice
  • Fostering communication between coach and student
  • Enabling feedback between coach and student
  • Providing accountability
  • Making it possible to measure a coach’s prescribed fix to see if the student is following through

Golf MTRx provides an extra set of eyes as well as immediate, reliable feedback in the absence of a human coach alongside you on the practice range. It allows you the opportunity for self-discovery, as you can creatively measure different pelvis motions and alignments to see their cause and effect, and you can see what your “best numbers” are that produce the best shots. Once your “best numbers” baseline is established, the drills provide a path for efficient practice so that you can turn mechanics into feel.

About the author
Though Randy Sparks teaches both adult and junior golfers, his central focus and passion is the PureStrike Junior Training Program, a year-round program he developed that today includes more than 45 junior golfers on the Florida panhandle. Over the last few years, golfers in the program have won more than 100 junior tournaments, and many are highly ranked on the Junior Golf Scoreboard.

The everyday golfers that Randy sees on the lesson tee — and the questions they ask — inspired him to author, with Medicus Golf, the book ”The Medicus PureStrike™ Golf Swing: 5 Simple Keys to Consistently Striking it Pure”. The concepts and recommendations in PureStrike have been battle-tested and refined through Randy’s real-world teaching of golfers at all skill levels in Destin, both in one-on-one lessons and large group clinics.
